Summary

Evangeline Fox was raised in her beloved father’s curiosity shop, where she grew up on legends about immortals, like the tragic Prince of Hearts。 She knows his powers are mythic, his kiss is worth dying for, and that bargains with him rarely end well。

But when Evangeline learns that the love of her life is about to marry another, she becomes desperate enough to offer the Prince of Hearts whatever he wants in exchange for his help to stop the wedding。 The prince only asks for three kisses。 But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’s pledged。 And he has plans for Evangeline that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy…

A new series about love, curses, and the lengths that people will go to for happily ever after。

Yes。 But by the end of the book it makes sense。 Only she could have rose gold hair because only she is the key to the prophecy。 Still a bit of an eye roll at that, but I was primarily reading this book for my boy Jacks anyways。 Stephanie’s skirting is simple, but it still manages to capture my imagination and leave me enthralled。 I really didn’t know what to expect out of this book, but it definitely wasn’t vampires! There were twists and turns and I even couldn’t figure out who was lying or who was telling the truth。 I can’t wait for the next instalment! 。。。more

Ugh。。 this was everything I love about Stephanie Garber's work。。 but even better。 Her books have this way of feeling so whimsical and magical, like you're literally stepping into a fairytale。。 but with all the darkness that sometimes gets washed out。 She also writes naiive mains in a way that doesn't make me want to throttle them。 They're smart and they question, and they make stupid mistakes but 。。 it works。 And you can't help but feel for them and get lost in their own journey。Once Upon a Brok Ugh。。 this was everything I love about Stephanie Garber's work。。 but even better。 Her books have this way of feeling so whimsical and magical, like you're literally stepping into a fairytale。。 but with all the darkness that sometimes gets washed out。 She also writes naiive mains in a way that doesn't make me want to throttle them。 They're smart and they question, and they make stupid mistakes but 。。 it works。 And you can't help but feel for them and get lost in their own journey。Once Upon a Broken Heart lived up to every expectation I had。。 minus that darn cliff hanger anyways haha! World: Nothing can top Caraval Stephanie Garber: Hold my drink。。。 It feels like I've been waiting forever for this eagerly anticipated Stephanie Garber novel。 If you were enchanted by the Caraval series then I promise you this is just as mesmerising。 We immerse ourselves in the world of The Fates again, particularly Jacks。 Forget Rhysand from ACOTAR, Jacks is where it's at now。 Evangeline's character is fascinating too, there's so much going on and so much left to be discovered。 I don't want to World: Nothing can top Caraval Stephanie Garber: Hold my drink。。。 It feels like I've been waiting forever for this eagerly anticipated Stephanie Garber novel。 If you were enchanted by the Caraval series then I promise you this is just as mesmerising。 We immerse ourselves in the world of The Fates again, particularly Jacks。 Forget Rhysand from ACOTAR, Jacks is where it's at now。 Evangeline's character is fascinating too, there's so much going on and so much left to be discovered。 I don't want to give too much away but I really, really need the next installment! Having read and enjoyed the Caraval trilogy, I couldn't wait to be thrown back into the same world for this first book in a new series。 Everyone's favourite Fate, the Prince of Hearts, is back alongside a new leading lady, Evangeline Fox。We're thrown straight into the action with one of the first scenes showing Evangeline seeking out Jacks for his assistance when her heart is broken。 Everyone knows it's a bad idea to make a deal with a Fate, but heartache makes people make bad choices, which is Having read and enjoyed the Caraval trilogy, I couldn't wait to be thrown back into the same world for this first book in a new series。 Everyone's favourite Fate, the Prince of Hearts, is back alongside a new leading lady, Evangeline Fox。We're thrown straight into the action with one of the first scenes showing Evangeline seeking out Jacks for his assistance when her heart is broken。 Everyone knows it's a bad idea to make a deal with a Fate, but heartache makes people make bad choices, which is basically the theme of the novel。 Evangeline's choice kickstarts the events of the novel and we follow her and Jacks through a web of intrigue, double-crossing and death。The novel is very well paced and exquisitely plotted, leading the reader deeper and deeper into this world and leaving you wanting more。 It ends on a delicious cliffhanger and with the reader having just enough information to be able to make a guess at what might be about to happen。 I can't wait until the next installment is released to see if I'm right! My only criticism is in the formatting。 As with the Caraval trilogy before it, the letters which are shown as handwriting on parchment are not readable on a Kindle。 I got around this with the original trilogy by switching to the phone app。 With this ARC, that workaround failed and I had to download the Netgalley app to be able to read these and also the newspaper articles, which were jumbled on Kindle。 Hopefully this will be sorted by the publisher before publication。 。。。more

After reading the Caravale series I was over the moon when I was given the opportunity to read this book。 This book had so much potential to be an incredible adult fairy tale filled with mystery, romance and comedy unfortunately I was a little disappointed。 While Stéphanie Garner succeeded in creating a magic world with interesting characters I felt that the story lacked that intrigue that urges you to keep reading, making it impossible to put a book down。I loved Evangeline and Jacks' relationsh After reading the Caravale series I was over the moon when I was given the opportunity to read this book。 This book had so much potential to be an incredible adult fairy tale filled with mystery, romance and comedy unfortunately I was a little disappointed。 While Stéphanie Garner succeeded in creating a magic world with interesting characters I felt that the story lacked that intrigue that urges you to keep reading, making it impossible to put a book down。I loved Evangeline and Jacks' relationship, but I would have liked more time to have been spent developing their connection further rather than going round and round in circles with Evangeline’s other love interests。I also found it difficult to connect with Evangeline, there was not enough character development。 It felt like Evangeline spent the whole time complaining about her love life or doing as others told her to instead of being the strong female lead she could have been。
Once upon a broken heart has a lot of potential and is written well it just felt like Stephanie Garbers' heart wasn’t quite in it。 Although this book wasn’t for me, I would still recommend it and I will certainly keep an eye out for the next book in the series。Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC is exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Thank you so much to Hodder for sending me a proof copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。Caraval remains to be one of my favourite books, but sadly Legendary and Finale didn’t quite meet my the same 5 star rating。 Which meant I was all the more curious when it came to Once Upon a Broken Heart。 Would it have the same magic as Caraval did the first time I read it, or would it feel lacking like the rest of the series?I have to say, this one didn’t let me down。 Following a new point of Thank you so much to Hodder for sending me a proof copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。Caraval remains to be one of my favourite books, but sadly Legendary and Finale didn’t quite meet my the same 5 star rating。 Which meant I was all the more curious when it came to Once Upon a Broken Heart。 Would it have the same magic as Caraval did the first time I read it, or would it feel lacking like the rest of the series?I have to say, this one didn’t let me down。 Following a new point of view of Evangeline worked really well, and this one felt so different to the world of Caraval。 Even though the world did feel familiar, it only made the whole reading experience reminiscent of being wrapped in a warm blanket。 Stephanie Garber has used the story of the fates from Finale and expanded on a completely different side of it, which felt so clever and I really enjoyed reading it。I really liked Evangeline as a main character and it was interesting to see a different relationship between two sisters, much like Scarlett and Donatella in the Caraval trilogy。 We definitely glimpse some of the magic I felt with the original books, and it shone through in the location and my personal favourite parts – the animals and food。 I always feel like food makes me feel so grounded in a story, and this one was no different。I felt so enveloped in this story and struggled to put it down。 Stephanie Garber has a knack of keeping the reader completely on their toes, and I read this over 2 days because it was so easy to read and absorbing! I’m so excited to be part of this new story and it definitely didn’t disappoint。Just a note to say although this story is a brand new series, I would recommend reading Caraval first。 You certainly don’t have to and there is only minor spoilers for the original trilogy, but I would still say you’ll get more enjoyment out of the book by reading it after the Caraval trilogy。★★★★★4。5 out of 5 stars-BethMay your shelves forever overflow with books! ☽ 。。。more

4/5 starsOH MY GOD!I have to admit it took me a while to get into the book, but once I did it was a magical experience。The ending!! Aghhh I can’t wait for the next book!I’ve always been curious about Jacks since reading Caraval and this book did not disappoint in that aspect! He is exactly what I wanted him to be and more。 I also liked Evangeline’s character, she was everything I want a fantasy heroine to be。The plot was a bit slow to get into, but in the end it was magical and bewitching。

i’m really surprised by how much i didn’t like this book; i loved the caraval books with a passion and they’re some of the only ya fantasy books i’ve found that are unique and firmly in their own aesthetic。 but once just didn’t deliver for me。 i won’t go into the plot too much but it was too predictable for me to be too interested in the story itself and the romance i was hoping for was not a large part of the plot, and it didn’t seem to have the spark that scarlett and julian & tella and legend i’m really surprised by how much i didn’t like this book; i loved the caraval books with a passion and they’re some of the only ya fantasy books i’ve found that are unique and firmly in their own aesthetic。 but once just didn’t deliver for me。 i won’t go into the plot too much but it was too predictable for me to be too interested in the story itself and the romance i was hoping for was not a large part of the plot, and it didn’t seem to have the spark that scarlett and julian & tella and legend did。 i couldn’t get invested EVEN THOUGH JACKS HAS BLUE HAIR NOW。 THIS IS EVERYTHING IVE EVER WANTED。 i gave an extra star for that choice alone。 ily <3 problematic king。i’ll probably read the next one because it’s stephanie garner and i love her。 but i just couldn’t get into this。 i wish i’d liked the new exploration of the world, but it felt too juvenile to me。 my biggest pet peeve was the names of the characters and cities。 serendipity skystead and valorfell are not the move for me。 。。。more

This book was provided to me by Netgalley。Well, that was a quick read。 It reads more as a novella than as a novel, it's not really fleshed out properly。 You definitely need to have read the Caraval trilogy to understand everything。 It was a typical YA book, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it just means that it took a long while to get to the point。 And just when things start to get interesting the book is done。 I hate cliffhangers like that。 I really liked Jacks in the Caraval trilogy, This book was provided to me by Netgalley。Well, that was a quick read。 It reads more as a novella than as a novel, it's not really fleshed out properly。 You definitely need to have read the Caraval trilogy to understand everything。 It was a typical YA book, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it just means that it took a long while to get to the point。 And just when things start to get interesting the book is done。 I hate cliffhangers like that。 I really liked Jacks in the Caraval trilogy, so I was really looking forward to reading this book。 Unfortunately, I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would。 It's a decent book, but just nothing special。 I'm giving it three stars。 。。。more

Overall I am left feeling disappointed by this book。 This book has had so much hype, and so many positive reviews, I was expecting so much more。Our main protagonist Evangeline is so naive, it's annoying! I don't know how Stephanie Garber is expecting me to function after this book。 It was everything I thought it would be and more。I was a little scared that I wouldn't like Evangeline (because who could ever be good enough for Jacks?), but she stole my heart immediately。She's selfless, brave, and grows into the hero she was always meant to be。 I'd even go as far as to say she's my favourite female lead in the world so far。 Eva, you dethroned Scarlett, be proud。There's an array of new faces, and so I don't know how Stephanie Garber is expecting me to function after this book。 It was everything I thought it would be and more。I was a little scared that I wouldn't like Evangeline (because who could ever be good enough for Jacks?), but she stole my heart immediately。She's selfless, brave, and grows into the hero she was always meant to be。 I'd even go as far as to say she's my favourite female lead in the world so far。 Eva, you dethroned Scarlett, be proud。There's an array of new faces, and some old ones too。 What's really fascinating about Garber's characters is that I can't hate any of them (well, minus Julian, he's my one exception), so all the new ones had me feeling for them on different levels。 If you haven't read the Caraval series before or didn't finish it, and you have plans to, then I'd suggest you don't read this until you've finished that, because it does spoil the very ending of the series。 If you have no interest in reading Caraval, then I think you can still comfortably enjoy this, but there will be references to Jacks and Tella among other things。 Once Upon a Broken Heart is also different from Caraval。 It feels more like a fairy tale than a magical carnival, but it's just as gripping。 I couldn't put my phone down and had to read it all in one go。Now let's talk about the vampires。 Yes, WE HAVE VAMPIRES IN THIS ONE! I was not ready, but I love the inclusion。 If magic exists, why can't vampires exist as well? And folks, they're the bloodthirsty kind。 Fun。 And finally, that ending。。。I'm in pain just from thinking about it。 The whole story was filled with twists, and that was the worst one。 If another series goes by without Jacks being happy by the end I'll riot。 5 stars from my very broken heart。*Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review* 。。。more

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC。This is my first Garber novel, and as a sucker for modern fairy tales I did enjoy it。 The concept of the Fates is intriguing and I'm hoping their back story gets explored more in the next book。 I liked Evangeline and Jacks as characters, though I wish Marisol had been slightly more developed。 The ending slightly came out of nowhere, but I'm interested enough to see out the next book。 Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC。This is my first Garber novel, and as a sucker for modern fairy tales I did enjoy it。 The concept of the Fates is intriguing and I'm hoping their back story gets explored more in the next book。 I liked Evangeline and Jacks as characters, though I wish Marisol had been slightly more developed。 The ending slightly came out of nowhere, but I'm interested enough to see out the next book。 。。。more
